* "95th percentile" is the method most commonly used by hosting companies for measuring client's bandwidth usage. 95th percentile billing allows your host to measure what amount of bandwidth is used during a 30 day period with some grace for peak usage via the following calculation:

Samples of your network activity are taken every 5 minutes. These logged samples show the amount of activity on the switch port that your server is connected to. Taking one sample every 5 minutes produces approximately 8640 samples in a thirty day month. This method bills you at the next highest sample after dropping the top 5% of usage, 432 five minute samples. This means your 36 hours of highest usage is something you would not get billed for as you are measured at the next lowest sample.
